Ember has grown up in foster care and has few memories of her past. Tired of making friends and leaving them behind, she tries to remain invisible. When a hot new guy asks her out, she is suspicious but agrees. But during their date something goes horribly wrong when Harrison is killed and Ember barely survives.
Now alone and on the run, she is offered sanctuary by a rich and charismatic woman named Ophelia. Ophelia's husband was murdered by the same gang. Ophelia offers Ember protection and she in turn becomes her protégé.
When one member of the gang is captured, teenaged Weston, Ember begins to question the morality of his interrogation and torture at the hands of Ophelia and her friends. When Weston claims she is being manipulated, Ember must sort the ugly truth from the pretty lies.
