Description of the story "The Lone and Level Sands"

In an alternate Mesopotamia, Tarlos is king of Kesh and brother to a demigod. When his brother is killed while attempting to avenge their mother's death, Tarlos journeys beyond the dead country to find the secret to immortality so he will never have to suffer the same fate.
While on his journey, Tarlos learns of the multiverse and the true nature of gods. While he is gone, a malicious being takes his place on the throne of Kesh, and Tarlos returns to claim his kingdom. But in order to do so, he must first face his deepest fear: the cold dark sting of death.

Kim Miller, I've slept outside in the desert before. Seeing more stars above me than I thought was possible was awesome.
