LINK 29: (AZEN) THE DAMNATION
Cassie giggled and wrapped her legs around my waist. Careful not to rock the car, I laid on top of her and shoved my lips against hers. As I slipped my tongue into her mouth, she reciprocated, and I ran my hand up her leg, onto to her inner thigh. I trailed my fingers up, up, stopped and then pulled my hand back.
She pulled back her face and shook her head.
"Too soon?" I asked.
"No!" she said, her face red from blushing. "Stop teasing me! If you're going to do it, do it already!"
"All right," I grinned and put my hand under her dress.
Out of nowhere, the car rocked back and forth as if several people were outside pushing on it.
"What the hell is that?" I asked.
Cassie fervently shook her head. "Just another one of those earthquakes. Ignore it, please, and continue what you were doing."
I tried to do as she said, and went back under her dress but the car lurched violently.
"What the flipping hell?" Groaning, I sat up and wiped the steam window.
Other students were outside shouting and struggling to stand. Some were trying to run, but the asphalt of the nearby street rippled like waves.
"Oh shit," I whispered. "It's happening! Why tonight? They said we had more time!"
"What are you talking about?" Cassie propped herself on her elbows. "Who said we had more time and for what?"
The transformer on the nearby telephone poll exploded into a shower of sparks, and it tilted in our direction.
"C'mon!" I cried and threw the door open.
She screeched as I grabbed her arm and yanked her out of the car. I jumped back, bringing her with me, seconds before the telephone pole came down. It landed directly on Cassie's car, crushing the roof and shattering all of the windows.
"My car!" Cassie cried. "Mom is going to kill me!"
"Trust me, that's the least of our worries!" I said. "We have to get to Jacob and Julie!"
The ground continued to rumble as students evacuated the gymnasium. Cassie cried out as we ran across the street and to the building. Principal Westwood has vanished from the front of the school. He had a duty to fulfill in getting to Cassie's family; he'd made the Zolomons a promise. A promise he'd relayed to me when he introduced me to them the night of the lake incident. They didn't want to keep us all in the dark, so he made the decision to fill me in. Of course, I didn't want to believe him that this night would ever come. And now it had, far earlier than expected. Now we had one goal, to get out of ground zero and to the Sanctuary point in the next town over.
Screams of terror were coming from inside as nearly everyone had made their exit. A student I recognized from homeroom burst from the doors and looked around. His eyes glowed bright red, and fangs protruded from his mouth.
I lunged forward and swung out my arm, clotheslining him. He flipped, cracked his skull on the ground, and went still.
"Oh my gosh!" Cassie said. "Why did you do that?"
"Didn't you see his eyes?" I asked. "He was one of them!"
"One of who?" she cried.
"One of the Possessed!" I said and dragged her inside. "Come on and stay close!"
We rushed into the dimly lit room. The power had gone out except for the emergency lights. Before us, we found a massacre; bodies were strewn about, with pools of blood everywhere. Some students were on the ground groaning, bleeding out, while others had the Possessed hovering over them. They scooped out their inner organs and shoved clumps of red into their mouths. Some eyed us as we entered, but were too busy feasting to attack.
I turned to Cassie and held a finger to mouth. She nodded, her eyes wide with horror. Carefully, we made our way through the room. I saw no sign of Jacob, Julie, or Vale. We walked in further, and a figure darted from behind one of the overturned tables. A Possessed saw this and lunged at them. I darted forward and tackled the creature. It hissed and snarled, but I put one hand under its chin and the other on its head and twisted. With a pop, the neck snapped and died.
I slowly stood as the other Possessed all lifted their heads. Cassie edged next to me as the ground finally stopped shaking.
"What's happening?" Cassie whispered, holding her hands to her chest.
"The Damnation," I said. "Hell, maybe even the end of the world."
Her eyes were huge, and she visibly trembled. The figure that had darted out hurried over to us. I brought back my fist but lowered it as I found it to be Fletch.
"Azen!" he said. "We have to get out of here!"
