MOMENT 29: SHATTERED HEARTS
Before I could yell at Pupper-Dog Boy, a loud crack came from the center of the room. Both girls still stood on the long steel table, fists up and glaring at each other. I cringed as Fox-Face's eyes rolled back into her head and she collapsed.
I crawled out from under our table and Pupper-Dog called after me, but again, I ignored him. I approached the table upon which Inicula still stood. She spun and glared with glowing red eyes. Her anger scared me stiff. I took a step back as she jumped to the floor, landing with a loud thud. She walked up to me, looked me straight in the eyes, and hissed. I cried out and staggered back. Inicula didn't follow. Instead, she turned and walked to the table where Pupper-Dog Boy hid. He whimpered as she grabbed its edges and flipped it straight over him and it slammed against the far wall. She kneeled next to Pupper lifted him to his feet and hissed at him as well. A puddle of pee came from the terrified pooch and pooled on the floor around him. I thought, for a moment, she would bite him and feed, but instead, she dropped him in his urine and stormed out of the cafeteria.
"Oh Author," BoB said. "That was something else!"
I looked at Pupper who shook his head and whimpered. I wanted to go to him, but I had to check on Fox-Face.
Scrambling onto the table where Fox-Face lay, I lifted her in my arms.
"Shannon?" I asked. "Come on, stay with me! Are you okay?"
Her head lolled. I put my ear to her chest and listened. She still had a heartbeat.
"Shannon!" I begged. "Come on, snap out of it!"
She opened one eye, and the other appeared swollen shut from where Inicula must've struck her.
"Daniel?" she asked, then narrowed her eye. "Magna. What the hell do YOU want?"
"I-I came to check on you! Inicula knocked you out and--"
"Put. Me. Down!"
I set her on the table. Fox-Face sat up and rubbed her swollen eye. I could tell she fought tears, but what could I do? If I tried to hug or console her, she'd bite my head off.
"Fox-Face," I said. "Just hear me out for a minute."
"There's nothing to hear, Magna," she said. "You cheated on me with that vampire skank. That's all there is to it...And those rumors, Rob started? The ones where you said we were intimate? You probably did say that! So do me a favor, and stay out of the rest of my life."
Fox-Face hopped off the table and walked toward the exit of the cafeteria. She stopped by Pupper-Dog and spat. "I hope he finds his happiness with your sister, Baby. Because he won't be finding it from me, and I can wager not from Inicula either."
She turned and left down the hall, following in Inicula's footsteps.
I looked at Pupper, and he frowned. "Magna, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cause this."
A deep sigh escaped my throat, and I wanted to scream and tell him how he ruined my life. In truth, I'd already done so. I walked to Pupper and patted him on the shoulder. "Go get cleaned up. I'm going to go rest. Tomorrow is a big day, and I don't know if you, Jeremy, and I will be going it alone in Cheesy City or not."
Pupper nodded just a little. "You think they're both that mad?"
I gave a slight nod. "Yeah, I believe they hate our guts."
"What about my sister?" Pupper asked. "Should you and her--"
I shook my head and walked away, leaving him to stand in his puddle of pee. BoB shouted in the background, "Who's going to clean this mess?"
As far as I cared, they had to have a janitorial staff. Or maybe Pupper could stay and help. I only knew I needed to get to a room, lock myself away, and sleep in the deepest darkness of my life.
I found my way to Residential Hall F and proceeded. As I passed by a door that had been left cracked open, I heard a giggle. Against my better judgment, I stopped to eavesdrop.
"So you're Magna's bodyguard?" Baby asked. "Jeremy, you're so strong!"
"Yeah, Baby," he said. "I'm the strongest of the group by far."
"Do you maybe, wanna make out?" she asked.
"Of course! I-I mean, yes, but you didn't have to ask."
I rolled my eyes and whispered, "Pupper-Dog Boy is going to kill you, Jeremy."
At that moment, I didn't care. I walked three rooms down, so I wouldn't hear any making out or the killing of Jeremy, and opened a door. The light from the hall lit up the dark room. Inside I found a pair of bunk beds. Other than that, a cabinet stood against the wall. I walked in and shut the door, bathing myself in darkness. Plopping down on the bed, I kicked off my shoes and lay there sucking in the silence. That is until I heard someone speak from the upper bunk.
